Handwritten Seas
10x14 inches each
herringbone Nepalese Lokta paper, translucent paper, 1890s penmanship lessons, ink-washed 1940s spelling homework, ink-washed 1950s penmanship lessons, ink-washed ledgers, blueprints, ink-washed 1800s ledgers, 1940s arithmetic homework, 1800s receipts, penciled musical notation, ink-washed 1920 railway ledgers, and ink-washed Freemason’s Lodge meeting minutes
$400 each or $2,200 for the whole series (I can replace the sold piece in the arrangement with a similar piece, if someone wants to buy the complete series.)
The Handwritten Seas series of seascapes leans into the juxtaposition of children’s handwriting with adults’ writing. The materials are from different eras in time and different times of life, but the vibrant colors tie the works together.
You can compare the writing of a child learning her letters in the 1950s to a child writing in the 1890s. And the adult writing on the receipts is as old as 1844!
I like to think about these children, some of whom are long dead and some of whom are likely still living, learning, and growing into adulthood. It’s a series about becoming.
